The Manchester United prodigy who could one day play for Cyprus

Manchester United’s 15-year-old forward JJ Gabriel has emerged as one of the most closely watched young players in English football, and his Cypriot family roots give supporters on the island a good reason to follow his progress. Gabriel, who turns 16 in October, made his first-team debut in United’s 2-1 pre-season victory over Atlético Madrid in Stockholm on 1 August, appearing for the closing stages of the match. The teenager’s promotion to the first team followed an exceptional season with United’s under-18s in 2025/2026. Gabriel became the winner of the Premier League Under-18 Player of the Season award after scoring 20 goals in 21 league appearances. He was also named Manchester United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year, becoming the youngest recipient of the academy award. From futsal courts to Manchester United Born in London in October 2010, Gabriel spent time with the academies of Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham before joining Manchester United. Futsal also played an important role in his early development, helping him build the close control and technical ability that have become central to his game. Gabriel’s profile has also grown through his association with Cristiano Ronaldo Jr, who joined Manchester United’s academy during his father’s second spell at Old Trafford. It has been reported that the pair were exceptionally close friends and regularly spent time together on and off the field, while it has also been said that the prospect is highly rated by Ronaldo. Eligible to represent four countries Gabriel has represented England at under-15, under-16 and under-17 level, including appearances during England’s European Under-17 Championship qualifying campaign in March 2026. However, England is not his only international option. Gabriel is eligible to represent Cyprus through his mother, the Republic of Ireland through his paternal grandmother and Trinidad and Tobago through his paternal grandfather. His father, former defender Joe O’Cearuill, won two senior caps for the Republic of Ireland in 2007. The Cypriot connection is also reflected in Gabriel’s widely reported full name, Joseph Junior Andreou Gabriel. England would appear to be the favourite to secure his long-term international future, given his involvement with its youth teams and the speed of his development at Manchester United. A future decision in favour of Cyprus is possible, but unlikely. It might depend on how persuasive his Cypriot mother is. What FIFA’s eligibility rules mean Playing for England at youth level does not prevent Gabriel from representing Cyprus in the future. Even if he later appears for England’s senior team, a switch may still be possible under FIFA rules. He must have played no more than three senior international matches, must have been under 21 when he made his final competitive appearance for England and must not have played at the finals of a World Cup or European Championship. He would also normally have to wait three years from his last senior appearance before switching and would need to hold Cypriot citizenship. For now, Gabriel has only represented England at youth level, meaning the door to Cyprus remains open.
