Cyprus Paralympian says intruder broke into her Limassol home and stole scooter

Cypriot para powerlifting Paralympian Maria Markou has reported a serious incident at her home while she was abroad representing Cyprus, saying an unknown person broke into the property and stole her scooter. Markou, who is also Cyprus’s baton bearer for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, said in a social media post that an unknown person had attempted to enter her home in the Agios Spyridonas area of Limassol and, on a second occasion, managed to gain access and steal the scooter. She published a photograph and video and appealed to anyone who recognises the person shown to contact her and help identify them. Markou’s full post follows: “In the early hours of 28 July 2026, between 2.45 am and 3.02 am, while I was abroad representing Cyprus at the Commonwealth Games, an unknown person attempted twice, within the space of a few days, to enter my home in the Agios Spyridonas area of Limassol (Zakaki). “The second time, he managed to enter the property and steal my scooter. The photograph and video below clearly show the face of the perpetrator. To this day, he has not been found. If anyone recognises him or has any information that could help identify him, please contact me immediately. “The issue is not only the theft of the scooter. What is more serious is that over the past few months there have been repeated attempts to break into my home, as well as other incidents in the neighbourhood. We now live every day with the fear that someone could break into our home again, as some people enter houses and steal whatever they find without being disturbed, with no apparent meaningful consequences and no one stopping them. “I am a person with a disability, and the feeling that there is no meaningful protection is particularly worrying. Today it may be me; tomorrow it could be an elderly person or anyone unable to protect themselves. “Please share this post so that it reaches as many people as possible and, above all, someone who may recognise this person and help identify him. “Please be careful and let us not remain indifferent. Some people allow these individuals to come and go freely and do whatever they want, without protecting us. Today it may be our neighbour’s home; tomorrow it may be ours. Everyone’s safety concerns us all.”
