China celebrates national day, ‘moon festival’ in Cyprus

The Chinese community of Cyprus celebrated a double event to mark the founding of the People’s Republic of China, a weeklong commemoration starting on October 1, as well as the Moon Festival that usually takes place in mid-September or early October to celebrate the end of the autumn harvest. The Chinese Solidarity Association Cyprus hosted an event in Nicosia, bringing together prominent representatives from the political , diplomatic, economic and business communities of Cyprus, as well as many families and members of the Chinese community living and working on the island. The event also provided a special opportunity to celebrate the independence day of the Republic of Cyprus, which coincides with China’s National Day, highlighting the longstanding bonds of friendship, cooperation and mutual understanding between the two countries. This relationship is based on the solid foundations of the past 55 years and bilateral relations between Cyprus and China that established diplomatic relations in December 1971. These strong ties, that have expanded into major cultural, commercial and business ventures in recent years, were also highlighted in the speeches by Che Huali, president of the Chinese Solidarity Association Cyprus, the association’s honorary president, Chris Michael, the newly appointed Chinese Ambassador, Yang Yundong and Kyriakos Iordanous, Director-General of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry, representing President Christodoulides.
