Agrotourism in Cyprus: an alternative to the beach this summer

Most people planning a summer holiday in Cyprus think of the coast first. But the island also has an inland option: agrotourism, based in mountain and semi-mountain villages, aimed at families, couples, groups of friends, or anyone wanting to get away from crowds. Cyprus’s mountain and semi-mountain villages tend to be cooler in summer than the coast, and offer traditional accommodation and a slower pace than the island’s more popular tourist areas. Several agrotourism units in the Paphos and Larnaca districts are also close enough to the sea to combine both. Agrotourism here means staying in villages built around stone houses, narrow lanes, local workshops, wineries and small family-run businesses, rather than resort-style accommodation. It’s presented as a way of seeing an older, more rural side of the island. Prices and options vary, so it can work for a weekend, a family trip, a day out, or longer, depending on budget. The countryside changes with the seasons : colour and scent in spring, cooler weather in summer, the grape harvest and food events in autumn, and stays near a fireplace in winter.
